A trail of distinctive colored ribbons will identify participating garage sales from Alma on the southern end of the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin, north along Hwy. 35 through Nelson, Pepin, Stockholm, and Maiden Rock to Bay City, WI. The trail then crosses west to Minnesota at Red Wing, MN and heads south on Hwy. 61 through Frontenac, Lake City, Camp LaCupolis, Reads Landing, Wabasha, Kellogg and Winona.
Bargain hunters can start anywhere along the route beginning at about 8AM with closing time set for about 5PM all three days. Rain or Shine! Mississippi Valley Partners sponsors the 100-Mile Garage Sale during the first weekend of May each year. Local residents and bargain hunters from distant cities enjoy church lunches and shopping amid the spring scenery of Lake Pepin and the Mississippi River Valley.

Join veteran birders Andy and Joyce Buggs on Whitewater’s part of this national effort to document migratory birds. Participants will observe a great variety of birds, which will likely include white pelicans, sandhill cranes, hawks, shorebirds, and many colorful songbirds. Binoculars, scopes, and bird brochures will be available. Anyone interested in birds is invited to participate. Various parts of the Whitewater River Valley will be visited by car and/or on foot.

"Man of Marble" is a gripping account of Agnieszka, a young film student who is making her graduation project- a documentary about the life of an ordinary bricklayer turned national hero, Mateusz Birkut. The Polish Museum Annex is located at 363 East 2nd St.
We often hear them calling in the dark of night, but most of us are unfamiliar with the elusive creatures known as owls. At this program, you will learn how to identify the owls of Whitewater State Park by their calls as well as by their appearance and habitat needs. Between the Shining Seas: American Society of Marine Artists National Exhibition
Exciting and varied art from dozens of the best marine artist working today are displayed in a wide array of mediums--oils, water colors, pastels, scratch board, pencil, sculptures and scrimshaw.

Wind, trees, wildlife, flowing water, valleys and bluffs of the park become a musical landscape as you are led up and along a bluff top path by composer and musician Ryan Ingebritsen. He will "compose" the Song Path, a concert set to a healthy walk. These guided listening tours will give you the opportunity to experience the sounds of nature as music. Call the park at 507-932-3007 extension 0, or stop at the visitor center to reserve your spot on one of these one and a half hour long activities. Three tours will be offered each of the following dates September 10, 11 and 12. Each tour begins in the south picnic area. Call the park to request shorter, less challenging Song Paths for senior groups and families with small children.

Family Art Day Extravaganza

This is an interactive art adventure for all ages. The goal of the art day is to celebrate the arts through fun family art activities that continue the Winona Fine Arts Commission’s and Blue Heron Arts Committee’s efforts to promote arts in the community through hands-on activities.
THE EVENT IS FREE & OPEN TO ALL AGES. Attendees will be able to move from one activity to another. Most could complete many art pieces and processes in the course of the day and could have numerous pieces in process at one time. The hours for the art projects are 10am to 2pm. Registration period begins at 9:30am and continues throughout the day.
Internationally acclaimed musician Lauren Pelon and award winning poet and essayist Gary Holthaus team up to offer a unique new program called "Story of Music, Stories from Home." Pelon plays a variety of instruments ranging from lute, lyre, and concertina, to recorders, gemshorn, and electric wind instruments. Holthaus reads from his work and that of others. Both the music and the readings offer unique perceptions of the natural world, and celebrate our sense of place, community, and home. Cost is $10 per person. This activity is funded by the Southeastern Minnesota arts and
cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Hawk Walk

On thermals and northerly winds eagles, hawks and vultures now ride to their wintering grounds. Given good winds, many will be seen. Broad-winged hawks, osprey, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks and sharp-shinned hawks are most likely to be seen. Well over 200 kinds of birds use the Whitewater Watershed each year. On this moderately strenuous walk to a bluff top, several will be seen. Bring transportation, as we’ll drive a short distance from the visitor center to the trailhead. Young survivor of the Titanic, Laura Buzzell, gives a first person account of surviving the Titanic sinking though handwritten diary entries. On display will be her riveting narrative of losing her father, art and other historical items associated with Titanic.
The exhibit commemorates the 75th anniversary of one of our country's most succesful conservation programs--the Federal Duck Stamp program. Panels explaining the important beneftis and diverstiy of wetlands, and existing threats accompany 36 stamps and signed waterfowl print.

The public is invited to participate in the 23rd Fall Frolic 5K fun run/walk at Saint Mary’s University. Registration will run from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in SMU’s Toner Student Center with the race beginning at 10 a.m. The $8 cost includes a t-shirt.
The annual event is free to SMU students, faculty and staff, but is open to the community as well. Typically close to 500 people participate; competitors of all levels (including walkers) are welcome.

. Presented by the Winona County Historical Society, guides will take groups to sites in beautiful Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona's oldest Cemetery, to visit with people from Winona County’s past. This year our theme is health care in the late 1800s. Not only will attendees learn about the lives of the people they meet on the tour, but also about the health issues and medical practices of the turn of the century. A soldier will tell his escape from death in a Civil War battle only to be taken by "the grip", a doctor will discuss his treatment plan for families who were losing infants to the "summer complaint", and other stories of medical practice, strange diseases and freak accidents. Tours start with the Trolley tour at Noon and the last group will leave the gate at 3 p.m. Admission is taken at the event and is $7 for adults, $5 for students 13 and older and $3 for children 12 and younger. The color excursion train will operate from Minneapolis to La Crescent, Minn., with an intermediate stop at Winona. The train will depart Minneapolis at 9:00 a.m. and operate via Canadian Pacific's scenic ex-Milwaukee Road main line along the Mississippi River. Passengers may detrain in Winona to spend the afternoon in town. The train will continue 24 miles to La Crescent where it will be turned and return to Winona and Minneapolis.
Both trips will include coach, first class and premium class. Premium class includes reserved seating in Milwaukee Road Skytop observation Cedar Rapids or Super Dome 53. For ticket information, visit their website.

The fall harvest festival offers apples, apple pie and ice cream. Steak shop caterers will provide brats and Polish sausages. There will also be samples of homemade delacacies of Polish origins such as, rye bread made with spook yeast, pierogis made on the spot, carameled apples, of course, and booths full of homemade goodies by Jane Sura and Mary Speltz. A large farmer's market will be available on Liberty Street. Just now we've found out that Bill Kampa will do his Polish Rye bread, also, on that day as well.
Local artists and vendors will sell their jewelry and crafts, and there will be contests for the kids as well as a raffle drawing for a Cichanowski canoe, Edel-Beyer crystal, Joan McGill jewlery, and our traditional one week stay in Lake Havasu City in Arizona. Some of the greatest songs are "journey stories" set to music. The traditional songs Five Hundred Miles, Wayfaring Stranger, Lonesome Valley and the songs of Woody Guthrie; Hard Traveling, So Long It's Been Good to Know You and many more will be performed by folksinger Charlie Maguire.
After a day with the 4th graders at Goodview Elementary School, teaching how to play the jaw harp and some of his favorite songs, Charlie and the 4th graders will perform for the public. The museum will be open up until the performance, so stop on in and take a journey through the fun Journey Stories exhibit before the show!
Chris Farrell, economics editor for “Marketplace Money,” American Public Media’s nationally syndicated public radio personal finance program, will speak to audiences about “The New Frugality”.
Chief FRANK BROWN of Canupawakpa Dakota Nation in Canada speaks from the oral history of the Dakota Oyate, illustrating from his own language and traditions. He will recount the historical sense of place and time of the Buffalo Nation, the several Dakota-speaking nations, and how they came to settle much of the interior of British North America, even their own sea ports. These many journeys and disporas occurred centuries before the Dakota Nation would encounter a crisis in Minnesota. The events of Minnesota in
1862 can then be seen as the result of a conflict which began a hundred years before.
CRAIG BLACKSMITH as a co-researcher for the Dakota Nations of Manitoba will describe how oral history was used to guide archival research in rediscovering and confirming a Dakota historical narrative. Of specific interest to Minnesota historical enthusiasts will be both how oral history and archival recovery can interact, and how Canadian and American sources in both categories complement each other using Dakota oral history from the Wabasha family in Minnesota to locate archival records in Ottawa, Canada.

WSU Soccer NCAA Regional Tournament

A victory in the NSIC/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament and a NSIC Regular Season Championship propelled the Winona State soccer team to the second seed in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. The Warriors will host the first two rounds of the tournament in Winona. Regis (CO) and New Mexico Highlands will kick off the regional with a 1 pm game on Friday at Verizon Wireless Stadium. The Warriors will then play the winner Sunday at 1 pm.
Each of the 10 wineries on the trail will feature their wines paired with holiday foods, including hearty fresh vegetables and soups, and of course the Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas ham! Here’s a chance to support the local economy and regional artists who make glass, jewelry, paintings, ceramics, carvings, wood, textiles, photography, baskets, Christmas ornaments and more.
The chorus and orchestra will perform four pieces: "Magnificat" by Johann Sebastian Bach, "Magnificat" by John Rutter, "Totus Tuus" by Henryk Gorecki and "Salvation is Created" by Pavel Chesnokov.
The Magnificat is a song of praise for the Virgin Mary. The text of the canticle is taken directly from the Gospel of Luke. For centuries, composers have adapted the text to their own compositions of music.
"Totus Tuus" was created to celebrate Pope John Paul II's pilgrimage to his native Poland. "Salvation is Created" is a Russian Orthodox Liturgical hymn performed in Church Slavonic.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students/seniors and can be purchased at Hardt's Music and Midtown Foods.

The ballet tells the story of a young girl, Clara, who on Christmas Eve dreams of a battle pitting the Nutcracker Prince against the Rat King and his band of mice. At a pivotal moment, Clara comes to the aid of the Prince and helps him win the battle. To reward Clara for her help, the Prince takes her to the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and sees a beautiful array of ethnic dance soloists such as Spanish Coffee, Marzipan and Chinese Tea.

By Steam: How Winona Grew with Steamboat & Railway Transportation
Winona was once called the gate city to the west. The mighty Mississippi brought steamboats and thus goods and people to what was once Wapasha's Prairie. The river was early Winona's lifeline and grew dramatically because of it. When the railroad came to Winona County we only prospered more. Capt.
Karnath will examine the steamboat industry and how it made the settlement of Winona County possible. Erik Brom will talk about the railroad and the impact it had on the growth of Winona County as well as its effects on the steamboat industry. Both men are local experts in their fields and will offer a wonderful overview about the importance of the power of steam.
Member artists will display original fine arts and crafts for the local community in a juried holiday sale. This family event includes a coffeehouse, music and reading of Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales."
