River Livin': Artists Favorite from the Leo Smith Folk Art Collection
The Shell Game tells the story of 100 years of clam fishing in the Mississippi beginning when John Boeple, a German immigrant, convincec skeptics that freshwater mussels were ideal for making buttons.
Jane Martin's Talking With… is a collection of eleven women's monologues. In each monologue, a different character teaches a lesson that they once learned from their past experiences. The characters range from a snake handler to a baton twirler and everything in between.

“The Mississippi River's Pearly Past and Present” with Dave Adcock
Dave Adcock talk will provide an in depth look at the rise and fall of the pearl button industry, and its impact on the development of river towns along the Upper Mississippi. As the pearl button industry declined due to the introduction of modern plastic buttons, a new use for the fresh water mussels of the Upper Mississippi was discovered in the cultured pearl market. We will explore the methods for harvesting fresh water mussels, both past and present, and discuss the impact that this harvest has on the overall health of the mussel population and this portion of the Upper Mississippi River.
Using wax, special dyes and tools participants will learn this long honored art. All materials for the class will be provided. Cost for this class is $8 for the public and $6 for WCHS members. Please sign up in advance by calling

Celebrate the return of the bald eagle! March is “Soar with the Eagles”
month at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha. A wide variety of activities is scheduled throughout the month. On Saturday, March 20, Whitewater State Park Naturalist Dave Palmquist will lead eagle field trips, to visit many eagle hot spots. Dozens, if not hundreds, of eagles will be seen; there will be a 20 minutes orientation at the National Eagle Center and then a 15 vehicle caravan will ride along Hwy. 61. Cost is $8 for adult, $6 for seniors and $5 for kids. This program will run from 8:30am-10:30am. Meet at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN. The Ku Klux Klan claimed that 100,000 Minnesotans were Klan members in the 1920s. Although the Klan was a secret organization, evidence can still be found of their activities throughout the state. In a recent Minnesota History article, Elizabeth Dorsey Hatle and our speaker, Nancy Vaillancourt, documented the rise and decline of the Klan in the area. Nancy's presentation will give an overview of Klan tactics and activities in Minnesota, as well as specific information on events in Winona County. This program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Nancy is a native of Winona with branches of her family have lived in Winona County since the 1870s. She is a graduate of Brigham Young University. She has worked at the Owatonna Public Library for 16 years and is now the branch manager of the Blooming Prairie Branch Library. Nancy volunteers at the Steele County Historical Society and is currently on the board of directors.
She has written a centennial history of the Owatonna Public Library and co-authored the book Steele County: Crossroads of Southern Minnesota.

The trail then crosses west to Minnesota at Red Wing, MN and heads south on Hwy. 61 through Frontenac, Lake City, Camp LaCupolis, Reads Landing, Wabasha, Kellogg and Winona.
Bargain hunters can start anywhere along the route beginning at about 8AM with closing time set for about 5PM all three days. Rain or Shine! Mississippi Valley Partners sponsors the 100-Mile Garage Sale during the first weekend of May each year.
